Congratulations to Mark Howard ‘81

Get the Picture?—an exhibition featuring artists Mark Howard and Chuck Fischer—is now on view through November 1 at the HEDGE Gallery.

Mark Howard, a 1981 graduate of Oratory Prep, has been an influential figure in the Northeast Ohio art scene since earning his degree from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 1986. In recognition of his remarkable career and lasting impact on the region’s cultural landscape, Howard was honored with the Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.

His body of work spans painting, sculpture, textiles, and public art, all reflecting his inventive use of color, shape, and pattern. Though painting has long been his primary focus, his background in textile design continues to inform his distinctive style.

Howard’s work is represented in numerous corporate and private collections, including The Cleveland Museum of Art. As he describes his process:

“I routinely observe my city and the people that make up its urban development, translating my impressions of daily life by orchestrating colors and shapes that move and weave across surfaces. This work is the evolving adventure I’ve discovered in pure abstraction.”
