John Kennedy ’27 Earns Essay Honors

Oratory Prep Junior John Kennedy, Class of 2027, has earned honors in the Harvard Political Review Essay Competition for his essay, “The Basis of American Democracy.”

Organized by the Harvard Political Review, a student-run journal of politics, policy, and culture founded in 1969, the competition draws submissions from students around the world, including participants from more than 20 countries across five continents.

John’s essay takes on a timely and complex question: what role should higher education play in shaping civic life, public discourse, and the future of American democracy? In his writing, John examines education not simply as preparation for college or career, but as a foundation for thoughtful citizenship, exposure to different perspectives, and meaningful participation in society.

His recognition speaks not only to the strength of his writing, but also to his willingness to engage seriously with the issues shaping the world around him. For students passionate about politics, policy, and civic life, the Harvard Political Review Essay Competition offers a respected platform to think deeply, write clearly, and join a broader conversation.
