A Lifetime of Dedication

For more than five decades, Jack Horan has left an immeasurable mark on the Oratory Prep community through his dedication as a teacher, mentor, coach, administrator, and innovator. His career at Oratory began midway through the 1975–1976 school year when he was hired by Fr. Michael Fitzpatrick to teach History and Economics. What followed was a remarkable journey of leadership and service that helped shape generations of young men both inside and outside the classroom.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Horan served in numerous leadership roles, including Dean of Students from 1978 to 1980 and during nine additional years at various points in his career. Beginning in 1980, he served as Chair of the Social Studies and English Departments, guiding the school's academic direction while mentoring countless faculty members and students.

A gifted and passionate educator, Mr. Horan introduced Oratory Prep students to the challenges and rewards of advanced academics. In 1983, he began teaching AP U.S. History, only the second AP course ever offered at OP, following AP Calculus, started by Fr. Paul Manning. Over the years, he also taught AP Modern European History, AP Microeconomics, and AP Macroeconomics, inspiring students to think critically and engage deeply with history, government, and economics. His classroom impact extended far beyond AP courses, as he taught an extraordinary variety of subjects, including U.S. History I and II, American Government, Sociology, World History, Art History, Music Appreciation, Public Speaking, English 9 and 12, the Vietnam War, and Personal Finance.

Beyond academics, Mr. Horan played a vital role in student life at Oratory Prep. He served as Student Council Moderator from 1978–1980 and revived the OP Bowling Team in 1995, remaining as coach for eight years. His passion for economics and competition led him to coach Oratory’s Fed Challenge team beginning in 1999, guiding students in the prestigious Federal Reserve Bank of New York competition through his first retirement in 2015 and again upon his return in the 2020s.

Mr. Horan also helped modernize the school in transformative ways. During the 1990s, he spearheaded the introduction of computers at Oratory Prep, first implementing technology in the business office before expanding it into classrooms across campus. As Technology Coordinator and later Technology Director, he played a pivotal role in preparing the school for a new era of learning and communication. His leadership continued as Associate Head of School from the mid-1990s into the early 2000s, and he twice served as Interim Head of School during periods of administrative transition.

Although he officially retired from full-time work in June 2015, Mr. Horan’s commitment to Oratory Prep never truly ended. He returned the following year to mentor seven new faculty members and soon after stepped back into the classroom to assist while a colleague was on maternity leave. What began as a temporary return evolved into continuing to teach two sections of AP U.S. History, extending his influence on another generation of Rams.

Jack Horan’s legacy at Oratory Prep is one of unwavering dedication, intellectual curiosity, servant leadership, and genuine care for students and colleagues alike. Few individuals have impacted as many areas of school life or touched as many lives over such a long and distinguished career. His contributions to Oratory Prep will continue to be felt for generations to come.
