On Tuesday, October 18th, six OP Middle School students participated in the School Consortium of Middle Schools annual Chess Tournament, held at Central Middle School in Stirling, NJ. The team of 8th graders Dan Bennett, Sean Caricich and Jonathan Cranley, and 7th graders Sebastian Cortes, Parth Desai and Charlie Sims placed 2nd overall in a field of 10 participating schools. Congratulations to all the participants!
On Tuesday, October 11, guest speaker Dr. Benny Widyono spoke to Model UN club members about the United Nations and his experience working for it. Dr. Widyono, a relative of Justin Oei ' 19, served as a United Nations diplomat in Thailand, Chile, New York, and Cambodia, where he was an integral peacekeeper in a country ravaged by political turmoil, civil war, and the Khmer Rouge's reign of terror.
Junior Patrick Heffernan was selected by USA Swimming to participate as an Athlete Representative at the annual USA Swimming Convention in Atlanta, Georgia from September 20 – 25, 2016. The convention consisted of business meetings and educational workshops conducted by USA Swimming, the National Governing Body of amateur swimming in the United States, as recognized by the United States Olympic Committee under the Amateur Sports Act. USA Swimming has over 340,000 athlete members and Patrick has been recognized as a leader by his peers.
The Associate Head of School, Owen McGowan, of Oratory Preparatory High School yesterday that Matthew Falcone of Florham Park, Brendan Mooney of Basking Ridge, Daniel Thek of Scotch Plains, and Xavier Warganz of Maplewood, have been named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.
We are proud to announce that OP senior Chris Rose has been recognized as a Semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 16,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT are chosen, representing less than 1 percent of the nation's high school graduating seniors. To put it in perspective, in the state of New Jersey, we have 499 semifinalists representing 122 high schools. Chris now has the opportunity to advance in the competition to Finalist standing and will then be eligible for some 7,500 Merit Scholarship awards. Congratulations Chris, and best of luck throughout the competition!
