Heffernan '18 attends Annual USA Swimming Convention

There were many leadership and educational opportunities for athletes at this event, which was attended by approximately 600 voting delegates. Athlete representatives actively participated with the leaders of USA Swimming and were expected to contribute their own perspective during discussions and seminars. They were involved in the legislative process, which will determine the rules that govern swimming as well as the election of the people who will fill our national leadership positions. They learned about Roberts’ Rules of Order and parliamentary procedures during approximately 20 hours of meetings and workshops.

During the convention, USA Swimming offered leadership development to athletes, opportunities to make presentations and motions in front of a large group, and mentoring opportunities with other athletes who attended their first convention. During the convention, athlete representatives were also expected to participate in an outreach clinic for a local food bank.
